ADULT PROGRAMS

Mon., 1/4, 7:30pm – Vt. Astronomical Society - Two Mini Talks: Chess Piece - Star Match by Bob Clawson -Did you know that in the Ancient Far Eastern Areas each chess piece had a relationship to a star or constellation? Each piece’s moves and value were also related to its star. Chess historyand demonstration of a few moves of the game. 2. Mars Opposition of 2010 by Gary T. Nowak –On Mars’ 15 yr. Cycle of Oppositions coming Near Earth. Upcoming one one of the worst for planetary watchers –not coming very close. Learn some tricks of the trade to get the best views.

Wed., 1/13, 7pm – Vermont’s Railroad Upgrades and Railroad Future with Mike Coates President of Vt Rail Systems.

Fri., 1/15, 6:30pm – Adult Movie: “Trouble the Water” [2009, 96 min.] In this documentary, an aspiring rap artist and her streetwise husband, armed with a video camera, show what survival is all about when they are trapped in New Orleans by deadly floodwaters and seize a chance for a new beginning.

Wed., 1/27, 6 pm – NEW Dine and Discuss Potluck Series: Resilient Spirits; Overcoming Adversity the World Over – Prof. Jane Ambrose leads a discussion of Isabelle Allende’s Daughter of Fortune about a young Chilean women left pregnant and alone when her lover leaves for California during the Gold Rush. She follows him only to be entranced by her new life of freedom and independence. POTLUCK FARE: South American cuisine – library provides tableware and coffee. Books available soon. Start reading as soon as possible! High School and up only.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance encouraged. Space is limited to avoid overcrowding. Call to register: 878-6956

Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes & puppets for toddlers with an adult. (Jan. 5,12, 19, 26)
Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets & math activities for preschoolers. (Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26)
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27)

Tues., 1/5, 3-4:30pm – TAB (Teen Advisory Board) – For teens, by teens. Plan programs you’d like to see, suggest books and DVDs you would like in the collection, have fun, bring friends. Snacks provided! New members always welcome. Gr. 9-12.

Wed., 1/6, 9am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956.

Wed., 1/6, 9am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register

Fri., 1/8 & 1/15, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by the Friends of Brownell Library.

Fri., 1/8, 6:00**-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” – Harry discovers a book marked mysteriously "This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and learns more about Lord Voldemort's dark past. Popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB. (PG-13) **Early Start Time!

Thurs., 1/14, 3:30-4:40pm – MPH (Middle School Planners and Helpers) – Students in Gr. 6-8 come and help re-design the YA room, help out with cool projects, and talk about what’s on your minds! Snacks too!

Tues., 1/19, 3-4:30pm – YA Writing Workshop – Come spend time with fellow teen writers while we explore the dynamics and complexities of writing. Help begin a teen library publication! Get feedback from peers. (Gr. 6-12)

Thurs., 1/21, 3-4:30pm – Wii-tastic – Come try our new Wii Game System! MarioKart, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play! For Gr. 4 & up. Register at 878-6956.

Fri., 1/22 & 1/29, 10-10:30am – Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Fun Picture Books! No registration required. On Jan. 22, Guest Reader Martha Lang will preview some new picture books she has written. For all Preschoolers.

Fri., 1/22, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “Up” – By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Also in the floating house is Russell, a stowaway Explorer Scout. Popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB. (PG)

Mon. 1/25, 4-5pm – Storybook Dolls – Mary VanBuren-Swasey, from the Green Mountain Doll Club, shares her collection of Dolls and Stuffed Characters from children’s books, including Olivia the Pig, Mark Twain & Huck Finn, Madeline, Linnea in Monet’s Garden, the Wizard of Oz, Narnia and more. Doll history will be included. Kids are invited to bring their favorite doll to share. For Gr. K & up, adults welcome, too. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs., 1/28, 3:30-4:30pm – Middle School Booklovers Club — Bring a book you have recently read to show the group. Snacks served. All middle schoolers welcome.

Sat., 1/30, 10-10:45am – Read to Sara, Therapy Dog – Sara is a Chocolate Lab who loves to listen to kids read! Her owner is an elementary teacher who will help you find a book to read to Sara, or you can bring one from home. For kids in Gr. K & up. Register at 878-6956.
