Wed. 1/3-3pm Jerry Fox slide/lecture –I Hope In Hell Their Souls May Dwell: History of Railroads in Essex from 1849-Present -a well-known local historian, Jerry Fox has made Essex’s railroads a focus of his research for over four decades. He has the slides to back it up. All ages. Meeks Memorial Lecture Series

Mon. 1/15 - Library Closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Wed. 1/17, 7pm “I’ve Been Working On the Railroad” by Vermont author and railroad man Robert C. Jones-besides teaching for 32, while concurrently pursuing railroad work over a 41 year period -Canadian Pacific, Vermont Railway, Green Mountain Railroad and the New England Central Railroad. He’ll tell of the work of brakemen, conductors, engineers, dispatchers, track worker and freight clerk. He’ll bring items for “show and tell” and offer lots of time of questions. Robert Jones is the author of Railroads of Vermont and The Central Vermont, A Yankee Tradition. He founded the Evergreen Press . All ages. Meeks Memorial Lecture Series

Wed. 1/24, 7pm Talk by former Vermonter Michael Aschenbach, about his recent book Vision 3000: The Transformation of Humanity in the New Millennium. He says: “this “this vision offers valuable knowledge to help you better understand the nature of our times, the enormous transformation we are going through, and the ways you can align your life, organization and communities with this emerging transformation. Aschenbach’s company Emerging Vision Media is dedicated to making the new way of looking at reality clearly visible and understandable. This may prove to be an uplifting antidote to recent bad news. Come prepared to think as far and wide as possible.

Wed. 1/3, 9am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956.

Wed. 1/3, 9am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register.

Thurs. 1/4, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board Meeting – Help us plan February’s events for teens at the library! Snacks! New members welcome.


Fri. 1/5 & 1/19, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Kids of all ages will enjoy Matthew’s lighthearted songs and improvisational stories. Lots of audience participation! No registration required.

Tues. 1/9, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Rice Is Nice! – Rice is enjoyed by people all over the world. The NECI Student Chefs will cook up some tasty rice dishes and read a variety of stories featuring rice. For kids in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Fri. 1/12, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie Night: “The Truman Show” (PG) – An insurance salesman, played by Jim Carrey, finds out that his life is actually a reality show. Free popcorn and movie on the big screen. Space is limited. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Thurs. 1/18, 3-4pm – Book Lust Pizza Club – Come enjoy some fresh pizza! Bring a book that you have recently read to share with the group! It’s a great time and all teens are welcome. Call 878-6956 so we know how much pizza to order.

Thurs. 1/25, 3-4pm – Green Mountain Book Award Program – High Schoolers are invited to read 2 more titles from the GMBA List: Hole in My Life by Jack Gantos (a memoir of the author’s time in prison for drug-running) and Donorboy by Brendan Halpin (about a girl who meets her sperm-donor father after both of her gay parents die). Stop by the Youth Desk to borrow the books.


Fri. 1/26, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie Night: “James and the Giant Peach” (PG) Orphaned James leaves his horrid aunts and travels on a giant peach with his new insect friends, bound for New York.
