Thurs., 3/1, 3/8, 3/15 & Mon., 3/5, 3/12 – 9:15am, 10am, 10:45am, 11:30 time slots. – Free Tax Help: for taxpayers w/low and middle incomes, especially those age 60 and older. Volunteer AARP foundation certified expert tax preparers Tak and Dorothy Ng will help. Sign up for a 30 minute appointment by calling 878-6955 or by dropping by the library’s circulation desk. Program available on Monday & Thursday mornings until April 15th. Reserve your place for tax-preparation.

Mon. 4/5, 7:30pm – The Cosmic Anomaly Wheel-an Astronomy Game hosted by Jack St. Louis. Jeopardy-style game w/ a twist, get a correct answer, the Cosmic Anomaly Wheel can change your points standing! You can even get every question wrong and still win thanks to the Cosmic Anomaly Wheel! There will be prizes awarded to the winners. The top winner will get a nice eyepiece that was donated to the club by Ron Anstey. The questions are on general topics in astronomy and related fields. Come play!

Wed., 4/7, 6pm – Community Dinner (bring a dessert) & 7pm Village Meeting at E.H.S. Vote on the budget that supports all the village departments, including Brownell Library.

Mon., 4/12, 3 pm – Travelogue of India and Nepal by veteran traveler Martha Lang.

Wed., 4/14, 7 pm – The Basics of Making Books with our own Martha Penzer. Do you have a manuscript of a collection of poetry, a memoir, or even a novel that you want published? Publish it yourself! Learn how to make hand-bound, limited edition books. Each participant shall produce a small book. Please reserve your place: 878-6955.

Fri., 4/16, 6:30-8:30pm – Adult Movie: “Julie & Julia” [123 min., PG 13] Julia Childs’ story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with Julie Powells’. A frustrated insurance worker who aspires to be a writer, Powells challenges herself to cook all the recipes in Childs first book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and to blog about the experience.

Tue., 4/20, 7pm – Library Trustees meeting

Wed., 4/28, 6pm – Dine & Discuss, Resilient Spirits: Overcoming Adversity the World Over. Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. This novel unfolds in the northeastern Himalayas at the foot of Mount Kenchenjunga, where an embittered old judge is looking forward to retirement when his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, arrives on his doorstep. Discussion led by Smita Narachania. Potluck dinner: try cooking some Indian or Nepali dishes to share. Library provides tableware, coffee and water. Phone 878-6955 to reserve a book and place.

Fri., 4/2 & 4/16, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by the Friends of Brownell Library.

Tues., 4/6, 3-4:30pm – Teen Advisory Board – For teens, by teens. Plan programs you’d like to see, books and DVDs you would like in the collection, have fun, bring friends. Snacks provided! New members always welcome. Gr. 9-12.

Wed., 4/7, 9am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – VOTING DAY! – Students in Gr. 4-8 have been reading a minimum of 5 books from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award! Call 878-6956.

Wed., 4/7, 9am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – VOTING DAY! – We will review the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award, and vote for

our favorite. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register

Thurs., 4/8, 3:30-4:30pm – MPH (Middle School Planners and Helpers) – Students in Gr. 6-8 come and help re-design the YA room, help out with cool projects, and talk about what’s on your minds! Snacks too!

 Fri., 4/9 & 4/23, 10-10:30am – Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Fun Picture Books read by a librarian! No registration required. For all Preschoolers.

Fri., 4/9, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “Where the Wild Things Are” – An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world--a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler. Mon., 4/12, 6:30-8:30pm – Bee Literate: Spelling Bee Fundraiser for Literacy – Cheer on your favorite team of Teens, Librarians, or Trustees as they spell their way to victory. Donate, buy sweet treats, or participate in our raffle to help raise money for literacy initiatives for Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program and Brownell Library Youth Programs.

Tues., 4/20, 3-4:30pm – Teen Theatre: Transitions – We all experience transitions (moving, changing school, questioning who you are, changing your hair, body, self…). Work with Kat and others teens to develop a theatre piece focused on this theme and these experiences. Writing and rehearsals will continue into the following months. Gr. 6-12.

Wed. 4/21, 3:30-4:30pm – It's All Greek to Me! – Learn about Ancient Greece, its famous philosophers and mythic heroes. Professor Mark Usher, Chair of the Classics Dept. at UVM, will share Wise Guy: The Life and Philosophy of Socrates and his new book, Diogenes, about a dog who moves to Athens to teach other dogs a new way of life. For fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, plus all other Kids in Gr. 3 and up. Books for sale at the program. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs., 4/22, 3:30-4:30pm – High School Book Lust –  Come chat with Kat about your favorite books! Snacks served. Gr. 9-12.

Fri., 4/23, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “The Princess and the Frog” – A fairy tale set in Jazz Age-era New Orleans and centered on a young girl named Tiana and her fateful kiss with a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again. Popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB. (PG)

Weds., 4/28, 2-3:45pm – Vacation Movie: “Monsters vs. Aliens”– When a meteorite from outer space hits a young woman and turns her into a giant monster, she is taken to a secret government compound where she meets a ragtag group of monsters also rounded up over the years. Popcorn and soda.

Thurs. 4/29, 1-2pm – Bike Ride on the Essex Bike Path – Kids and Parents, meet us at a parking lot in Essex (TBA) for a Spring Vacation Bike Ride. We’ll talk about Bike Safety, and look for signs of spring as we enjoy the views on the Essex Bike Path. Helmets required for all riders. For kids in Gr. K-5 with an adult rider. Thurs., 4/29, 3-4:30pm – Teen Poetry Play – Come play with words in honor of National Poetry Month. Kat will provide a bunch of prompts and exercises to help you explore and expand your love of poetry. Gr. 6-12.

Fri. 4/30, 10-10:45am – The Swing Peepers – Matthew Witten & John Hadden, recent Artists-in-Residence at Summit Street School, are here to sing and goof off with the Spring Vacation Crowd! Come sing the songs you composed and performed with the Peeps. No experience necessary, but laughing is required!!
