ADULT PROGRAMS




Wed. 2/7 3pm- Robert L. Walsh talks about his book Through White Eyes: Color and Racism in Vermont which discusses the rich contributions of Afro-Americans in Vermont and the continuing problem of racism in our communities. How to teach about racism and what is being done to combat it in our state. Copies of the book available for sale. Meeks Memorial Lecture Series.

Wed. 2/14 7pm-Book Discussion of Sam Hand’s The Star That Set: the Vermont Republican Party 1854-1974 led by Prof. Hand himself. For 100 years the Republic party held sway in Vermont politics. The book covers coalitions and electoral battles for state office and the coalitions’ fragmentation. Copies available at the Circulation Desk. Meeks Memorial Lecture Series.

Fri. 2/16 6:30pm – Foreign Film Friday: Bread and Tulips – Forgotten by her family in a highway cafe, an Italian mother decides not to wait for them and instead hitchhikes to Venice. Share the romance of a mother who is taken for granted and finds a new love. Italian (English subtitles). rated PG-13

Wed. 2/21 3pm- What is the Sport of Curling? Rich Dauphin of the Green Mtn. Curling Club presents an overview of the history, basic play, equipment, rules and regulations, curling etiquette and a U.S. Curling Assoc. Video. (Hint) an Olympic sport played on a 138’ long strip of ice with stones. Come find out more. All ages. Free

Thu. 2/22 2pm- February 25, 1957 IBM opened its doors in Essex Junction. Corky Elwell was Village Manager in ’57, George Dunbar, an early IBM employee, will share memories of IBM’s first years here in Vermont. Come ready to share your stories. Wed. 2/28 7pm-3rd Annual Rare Book Road Show- Three local booksellers Marie Tedford who specializes in ephemera, Deb Barnum and Kathy Roberts both children’s book experts will speak about book collecting today. Patrons may bring one book each for Marie, Kathy or Deb to examine and offer an estimated value as time permits. Kolvoord Community Room. Free and Open to the Public. 878-6955

Thurs. 2/1, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board Meeting – Help us plan February library events for teens! Snacks! New members welcome.

Fri. 2/2 & 2/16, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Kids of all ages will enjoy Matthew’s lighthearted songs and improvisational stories. Lots of audience participation! No registration required.

Wed. 2/7, 9-9:45am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from the DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956.

Wed. 2/7, 9-9:45am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register.

Fri. 2/9, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie Night: “Spellbound” (PG) – A fascinating documentary about 8 teenagers trying to win the National Spelling Bee. (Brownell’s own Teen Spelling Bee team will compete early in March.) Space is limited. Hosted by TAB.

Sat. 2/10, 10-11am – Read to Clyde & Sara, Therapy Dogs – Clyde (Maltese) and Sara (Chocolate Lab) love to listen to kids read! Sign up now to read to Clyde or Sara for 10 minutes & listen while others read. Bring a book or find one here! For Gr. K-5. 878-6956.

Mon., 2/12, 2/19, 2/26, 6-7:30pm – Growing with Mother Goose – A 3 week literacy program for parents of children ages 3-5. Participants receive 9 free picture books. Sponsored by Essex Early Childhood Connection. Call Sarah @ 879-9422 to register.


Tues. 2/13, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Chinese New Year! – Chinese New Year starts Feb. 18 for Year of the Pig. The NECI Student Chefs will cook tasty Chinese food and read folktales from China. For kids in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs. 2/15, 3-4pm – Book Lust Pizza Club – Come enjoy some fresh pizza! Bring a book that you have recently read to share with the group! It’s a great time and all teens are welcome. Call 878-6956 so we know how much pizza to order.

Thurs. 2/22, 3-4pm – Green Mountain Book Award Program – High Schoolers are invited to read 2 more titles from the GMBA List: Godless by Pete Hautman (16 year-old & his friends create a religion, worshipping the town water tower) and Usual Rules by Joyce Maynard (13 year-old Wendy & her family realize her mom has died in events of 9/11). Stop by Youth Desk to borrow books.

Fri. 2/23, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie Night: “Matilda” (PG) – The story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable. Free popcorn and movie on the big screen. Space limited. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Mon. 2/26, 2-3pm – “Drumming from the Heart” – Mary Mitchell presents Native American Drumming, which carries on the tradition of the drum as the Heartbeat of Mother Earth. For students in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.
