Mon. 3/5, 7-9pm – Scale of the Universe: a Lecture by Albert Boudreau-will include easily understood “scale models” to help bring the topic down to human dimensions. How do astronomers measure fantastic distances associated with astronomy? What are the challenges of traveling to the nearest stars? Cosponsored by Vermont Astronomical Society and the Brownell Library. Free & Open to the public.


Wed. 3/7, 7pm – Some Wonderful Women of Chittenden Co. presented by the County Historical Society highlighting the Kolvoord Room. Photo Exhibit introduces Harriet Powell, Lucinda Hinsdale Stone, Nellie Waite Flynn etc. With talks by Gail Rosenberg Ann Arm, Lynn Perrin, Marguerite Hurrey Wolf, Rickie Emerson, and others about one woman from each of the 18 towns. Celebrate Women’s History Month! Meeks Lecture Series.

Wed. 3/14, 7pm – Creating Understanding Between Afghans and Americans – Four Afghan exchange students who are at Essex High School for a week will show slides and talk about their culture. Come meet these young men and women and learn more about life in Afghanistan. Hosted by EMS Teacher Jane Vossler. Refreshments served. For all ages.

Fri. 3/16, 6:30pm – Foreign Film Friday: The Chorus (Les Choristes) – Set in 1948, a professor of music becomes supervisor at a boarding school for troubled youth. Upset by how repressive things are, he tries to transform his students through the power of song. PG-13. French (English Subtitles)

Thu. 3/22, 3pm – Nancy Means Wright, mystery author from Cornwall, VT speaks about her take on writing regional mystery stories such as Mad Cow Nightmare, Poison Apples, etc. Free and open to the public.

Wed. 3/28, 7pm Girls and Vermont’s Great Outdoors: Growing Up in a Rural Landscape-A talk by UVM Geography Prof. Cheryl Dunkley – Vermont is touted as a great place to raise children, but recent research on childhood in Vermont points out some challenges of growing up in rural villages and towns. This talk draws on three research projects with young Vermonters of varying ages and circumstances. Each project provides a different view of how girls experience the rural landscapes and cultures of Vermont, and asks girls to describe their lives in their own words. Audience members will be asked to share their perceptions and first-hand accounts of the topic. Meeks Lecture Series

Thu. 3/1, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board Meeting – For teens, by teens. If you’re a teenager, please come and help us plan programs at the library that you’d like to see! Snacks! New members welcome.

Fri. 3/2 & 3/16, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Kids of all ages will enjoy Matthew’s lighthearted songs and improvisational stories. Lots of audience participation! No registration required.

Mon. 3/5, 3pm – “A Window into India” – Nirmala Kamath shares Indian traditions and serves pulao (rice with spices). Each child will be given a special Indian name. For Gr. K-5. Register in advance.

Wed. 3/7, 9-9:45am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from the DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in April. Group discussion encouraged! Register at 878-6956.

Wed. 3/7, 9-9:45am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in April. For Gr. K-3. Register at 878-6956.

Fri. 3/9, 6:00pm – Teen Movie Night: “The Island” (PG-13) – Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson star as residents of a utopian island who eventually find out they are clones about to be “harvested.” The sci-fi thriller follows their attempt to escape. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Tues. 3/13, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Irish Soda Bread! – In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, NECI Student Chefs will serve Irish Soda Bread and read folktales from Ireland. For kids in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Thu. 3/15, 3-4pm – High School Book Lust Pizza Club – Come chat about whatever book you happen to be reading right now and have pizza too! This month’s Book Lust will be for High Schoolers, next month for Middle Schoolers. Call 878-6956 so we know how much pizza to order.


Sat. 3/17, 10-11am – Read to Clyde & Sara, Therapy Dogs – Clyde (Maltese) and Sara (Chocolate Lab) love to listen to kids read! Sign up now to read to Clyde or Sara for 10 minutes & listen while others read. For Gr. K-5.

Fri. 3/23, 6:30pm – Family Movie Night: “Where the Red Fern Grows” (PG) – A 2003 version of the heartwarming children’s classic about a boy and his two red-bone hunting hounds, “Old Dan” and “Little Ann.” Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Thu. 3/29, 3-4pm – Green Mountain Book Award Program – Final meeting! Come and vote for the book you think deserves the GMBA!
