Sat., Nov. 1, 3-5pm – Journal-writing Workshop develops themes in Let’s Talk About It: Love & Forgiveness,
made possible through a grant from the American Library Association and the Fetzer Institute. Take the Forgiveness Quiz in the library lobby.

Mon., Nov. 3, 7:30pm – Digital Astrophotography Part 2 By Joe Comeau- further techniques of Astrophotography- on collection of video and still image data and discuss image processing techniques—Inexpensive "Nebulosity" program works well with common cameras, Registax 4, a free powerful program with video, and Photoshop and various adders. Sponsored by VAS and Brownell Library. Open to all ages.

Wed. Nov. 12, 7pm – ** SPECIAL CIVIL WAR EVENT – Civil War Period Artifacts Road Show with Vermont’s Civil War Expert Howard Coffin at MEMORIAL HALL IN ESSEX CENTER. Bring your 19th century artifacts from the Civil War period, and stories that go with them. Mr. Coffin will examine your pieces (limit 3), discuss possible provenance. Free and Open to All. Part of Essex Civil War Sites Project-. Get involved; learn about Essex veterans and their families. Sponsored by the Meeks Memorial Fund.

Fri., Nov. 14, 6:30-8:30pm – Adult Movie: “Bobby” – ( Rated R) – A re-telling of the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968 through the eyes of 22 people who were there.

Nov., 17-22 – Friends of Brownell Library Week Long Book Sale-Lower Level Book Room. Stock Up for Long Winter Nights and/or some bargains for holiday gifts. Room open all Library Open Hours.

Tues., Nov. 18, 7pm – Library Trustees Meeting

Wed., Nov. 19, 7 pm – To highlight National Restorative Justice week, November 16-23, Essex Community Justice Center (ECJC), Deb Hamel, Director, hosts film and discussion on how restorative justice can address community concerns about crime and conflict. This program supports Let’s Talk About It: Love & Forgiveness. See large lobby table display.

Mon., Nov. 24, 7pm – **SPECIAL CIVIL WAR EVENT Essex’s Civil War Soldiers: Where They Traveled, Where They Fought with Howard Coffin Encore-who has examined our list of Essex veterans and will tell of the campaigns in which they were involved. Stories of our veterans! Open to All. Part of Essex Civil War Sites Project- Get involved, help do the research, learn about Essex veterans and their families. Sponsored by the Meeks Memorial Fund

Youth Events


Fall Story Times! Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance is encouraged. Space is limited in each group, to avoid overcrowding. Pre-registration required. Call 878-6956.

Here’s the schedule:

Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, and puppets for toddlers with an adult. (Nov. 4, 18)
Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets, and math activities for preschoolers. (Nov. 4, 18)
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (Nov. 5, 12, 19)

Mon., Nov. 3, 3:30-4:30pm – Teen Advisory Board – Snacks provided! New members always welcome. Gr. 9-12.

Wed., Nov. 5, 9-9:45am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students keep a log and vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Register at 878-6956.

Wed., Nov. 5, 9-9:45am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Register at 878-6956.

Fri., Nov. 7 & 21, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by Friends of Brownell Library.

Fri., Nov. 7, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “The Other Boleyn Girl” – ( Rated PG-13) - Based on the novel by Philippa Gregory, Anne Boleyn and her sister Mary vie for the love of King Henry the VIII. Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Thurs., Nov. 13, 3:30-4:30pm – Middle School Book Lovers Club – Come chat with Kat about whatever book you’re reading right now. Snacks too! Gr.6-8.

Fri., Nov. 14, 10-10:30am – Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers are welcome to come listen to Picture Book Stories and have fun with Finger Plays and Action Rhymes. No registration required.

Thurs., Nov. 20. 3:30-4:30pm – High School Book Lust/Loathe – This month we’re dishing on the books we love and hate! Crowing about a favorite book is easy. Also be prepared to explain why the book you loathe did not live up to your expectations.

Fri., Nov. 21, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “Nim’s Island” – (Rated PG) - 11 year old Nim lives with her microbiologist father on a private island in the South Asiatic Sea. When her dad is caught in a storm, she emails an author, who comes to help her search for her father. Based on the book by Wendy Orr. Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Sat., Nov. 22, Noon to 1pm – Read to Clyde & Sara, Therapy Dogs – Clyde (Maltese) and Sara (Chocolate Lab) love to listen to kids read! Sign up now to read to Clyde or Sara & listen while others read. For Gr. K-5.

Mon., Nov. 24, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Cranberries – Help the NECI Student Chefs make a batch of Cranberry-Orange Relish, and bring some home for Thanksgiving Dinner. The chefs will serve Cranberry Bread and read stories about cranberries, one of our native crops. Register. For kids in Gr. K-5.
