Events for Adults

Mon. Aug 6, 7pm - Apollo/Saturn V As Seen By Someone Who Worked On the Saturn VI Unit – Speaker Paul H. Warren, IBM RF[Radio Frequency] Systems Engineer on Apollo/Saturn V responsible for RF system on AS-501(Apollo4), AS-503 (Apollo*) and AS-506 (Apollo11). Co-sponsored by the Vt. Astronomical Society and Brownell Library. Free & Open to the Public.


Wed. Aug. 15, 7pm –Joe Citro, Vt’s Ghost Hunter – "Mysteries in the Mountains"- a tour of Vermont focusing on its offbeat history, ghostly tales, and unsolved mysteries. Some will be local and perhaps a little too close for comfort. He will also share some of his own "investigations" into the unknown. Middle School through Adult recommended. Free!

Thurs. Aug. 16, 9am-1pm – Library Closed for Planning and Safety Training-Opens at 1pm.

Fri. Aug. 17, 6:30- 8:30pm – Mystery Movie for Adults: “Frenzy” – Hitchcock’s electrifying story of a faulty police search for a serial rapist/murderer in London. (* This film was rated R by the MPAA for graphic violence and nudity.)

Mon. Aug. 20, 5:30-8:30pm – Special Summer After Supper Book Sale! – Friends of Brownell Library suggest: Come in out of the heat, find a few beach reads. New stock! Hardcovers $1.50, Softcovers $.75. Sale in Friend’s lower level book room at the library. Save a tree, bring a bag.

Vermont Reads 2007: Counting on Grace by Elizabeth Winthrop – Read it and share it – copies available at Adult and Youth Desks. Programming begins in September – Prepare for Author’s Visit to Winooski on Sept. 29, 2007.

Events for Youth
“Get a Clue @ Your Library” wraps up this month. With over 2000 books read so far, we will continue counting until school starts. Bring in your Reading Record!

Wed. Aug. 1, 2-3pm – Final Session of Chess for Kids – Join the Chess Lovers from our Teen Advisory Board for an hour of play. We provide the chess sets and you provide the strategy. Sign up at Youth Desk. For Gr. 4-8.

Thurs. Aug. 2, 2-3pm @ A.D. Lawton School – Our Final Summer Reading Party – No Strings Marionette Company performs “Nick of Time,” a puppet show in outer space. Kids get an achievement certificate and a free book. Register now - For all kids who show us their Reading Records.

Thurs. Aug. 2, 3-5pm – Teen Advisory Board – For teens, by teens. If you’re a teenager, please come and help us plan programs at the library that you’d like to see! Snacks! New members welcome.

Fri. Aug. 3, 7-8pm – Dan’s Service in Kolkata – Dan DeSanto, our Young Adult Librarian, presents stories and slides from his St. Michael’s College MOVE service trip to India. Dan worked in Mother Teresa’s homes; the New Life, New Hope Orphanage; and the Sabera Foundation in Kolkata, India. For Adults and Youth of all ages.

Mon. Aug. 6, 2-3pm – Reading Buddies - Kids in Gr. K-5 read to Teen Mentors. Sign up in advance.

Tues. Aug. 7, 1-2pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Ice Cream Extravaganza – The NECI Student Chefs will make ice cream and offer a variety of topping for extravagant sundaes. Stories, too! Register in advance. For kids entering Gr. K-5.

Fri. Aug. 10, 10-10:45am - Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by the Friends of Brownell Library.

Fri. Aug. 10, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “Murder on the Orient Express” – Murder and intrigue follow Inspector Poirot onto the rails in this 1974 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s book. (Rated PG.) Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Mon. Aug. 13, 2-3pm – Last Session of Reading Buddies
- Kids in Gr. K-5 read to Teen Mentors, with a 3pm Ice Cream Party to follow! Sign up in advance.

Thurs. Aug 16, 3-4pm – Middle School Book Lovers Pizza Club - Come chat about whatever book you’re reading right now and have pizza too! This month’s program for Middle Schoolers, next month High Schoolers. Call 878-6956.

Thurs. Aug 16, 7-9pm – Teen Poetry Event @ Essex CHIPS Teen Center – If you’re a teen, bring your poetry or the poetry of a poet that you really like to read onstage. Ham it up – the audience is also the entertainment!

Mon. Aug. 20, 7-8pm – Read to Meagan, Therapy Dog – A new Therapy Dog is visiting this summer. Meagan is a West Highland Terrier who loves to listen to kids read. Take turns reading for 10 minutes. For kids entering Gr. K & up.

Fri. Aug. 24, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “Holes” – An innocent boy gets sent to a detention camp, where the warden makes all the boys dig holes. From the book by Louis Sachar. (Rated PG.) Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.
