Events for adults

Mon. Sept 3 – Closed for Labor Day

Mon. Sept 10, 7pm – Fun with Astronomical Observing by Dennis and Tim Woos –

Dennis and Tim have been Vermont Astronomical Society members for several years. They have built several scopes and have experience observing and imaging the night sky. Come see their work. Sponsored by VAS and the Brownell Library.

Wed. Sept.12, 7pm – The Roman Catholic Church: A Center for French Canadian Vermonters – a Talk by Prof. Andre Senecal. Senecal will share his knowledge of the centrality of the Catholic faith in the lives of Vermonters whose roots are in Quebec. Free & Open to the Public. Vermont Reads 2007.

Tues. Sept 18, 3pm – Tête-à-Tête avec Les Ainés Quebecois/Vermontois – A gathering of local French Canadian seniors sharing their family’s stories, childhood memories, discussion of festivities, customs, problems with bigotry and neighborliness, etc. in Vermont. All guests encouraged ask questions and tell stories. All ages welcome. Coffee and Sour Cream Raisin Pie for refreshments. 878-6955 questions. No registration required. Wed. Sept. 19, 7pm – Mémére Catherine Charron-French Canadian Raconteuse/Storyteller of traditional Quebec stories – A program for ages 8 through 100 years. Mme Charron is the author of Marguerite’s Beluga family & Other French Canadian Tales; copies of the book will be for sale. Vermont Reads 2007.

Thurs. Sept. 20, 9am-1pm – Library Closed for Long Range Planning Meeting

Mon. Sept 24, 5:30-7:30pm – Potluck Supper and All Ages Book Discussion of Counting on Grace – Please bring favorite family food that your grandmother used to cook (Fr. Canadian or any other ethnic group). Get a copy of Counting on Grace and read it before you come (Makes a good family read aloud). Library provides beverages and tableware. Vermont Reads 2007

Fri., Sept. 21, 6:30pm – Adult Movie: Black Robe Black Robe is the story of Jesuit Father Laforgue (Lothaire Blutheau) who travels with his young guide, Daniel (Aden Young), and a group of Algonquin Indians into Canada’s northern territory in an effort to convert Indian peoples. This film offers a fictionalized version of a historical cultural collision which ultimately devastated North American Indian peoples. Black Robe received an R rating from the MPAA.

Thurs. Sept 27, 3pm – Advance Directive Workshop – John Campbell, Executive Director of the Vermont Ethics Network, will examine the reasons why having an Advance Directive (Living Will) is important to assist patients and their loved ones in communicating personal wishes about the type and kinds of health care one wants, particularly near life’s end. For those that already have their Advance Directive or Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, now is an excellent time to review and update these documents, as well as learn about the new Vermont Advance Directive Registry.

Sat. Sept 29, 1-4pm – Winooski Middle/High School—Counting on Grace author Elizabeth Winthrop will speak and give a slide presentation. There will also be French-Canadian music and a variety of other activities TBA. Vermont Reads 2007


Events for Youth

Registrations begin Tues., Sept. 4th for Fall Story Times! Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance is encouraged. Space is limited in each group, to avoid overcrowding.

Here’s the schedule which starts in October:
Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, and puppets for toddlers with an adult.
Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets, and math activities for preschoolers.
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program.

Fri. Sept. 7 & 21, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by the Friends of Brownell Library.

Thurs. Sept. 13, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board – For teens, by teens. If you’re a teenager, please come and help us plan programs at the library that you’d like to see. We serve snacks! New members welcome.

Fri. Sept. 7, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “Spirited Away” – While moving to a new home in Japan, Chihiro and her parents become trapped in a world of Japan’s Gods, until a young boy, Haku, helps Chihiro save her parents and find her way home. (Rated PG.) Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Thurs. Sept. 20, 3-4pm – High School Book Lust Pizza Club – Come chat about whatever book you’re reading right now and have pizza too! This month’s program for High Schoolers, next month Middle Schoolers. Call 878-6956.

Mon. Sept 24, 5:30-7:30pm Potluck Supper and All Ages Book Discussion of Counting on Grace – A great program for families, based on this year’s Vermont Reads title. Grace is a French Canadian girl who works in a dangerous mill in a small Vermont town, to help her family survive. See details above.

Tues. Sept. 25, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: A Is for Apple – The NECI Student Chefs make applesauce and offer a variety of fresh apples for tasting. The chefs also read stories about apples. Register in advance. For kids in Gr. K-5.

Fri. Sept. 28, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “Bridge to Terabithia” – The story of Jess and Leslie’s friendship, tragedy, and escape into imagination. From the book by Katherine Paterson. (Rated PG.) Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.
