Mon., 11/ 5, 7pm: Vt Astronomical Society Presents: Model Rocketry by Howard (Howie) Druckerman. Howie flew Estes model rockets as a kid, and again with his kids when they were young. He discovered the world of medium and high power rocketry and is back flying much larger rockets along with the model ones. Free and Open to the public.
Wed., 11/ 7, 7 pm: Discussion of Atonement by Ian McEwan led by Charlie Purinton, Vermont National Guard Chaplain. The novel unfolds partly during evacuation of allied forces at Dunkirk in 1940. Receive discounted ticket for acclaimed movie version at Merrill’s Roxy, Burlington, this winter. Copies of book available at Adult Circulation Desk. Start Reading Now!
Sat., 11/10, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm: Story Collecting Day ~ in collaboration with "The War," the PBS documentary, WW II vets or those with home front memories may submit their narratives on-line. Essex Boy Scout Troop 676 will do the data-entry. Call 878-6955 for an appointment.
Wed., 11/14, 7 pm: Vermont Army National Guard Sgt 1st class Jim Greene presents his photographs of Iraq synchronized to the ballade “We’re All American,” written and sung on guitar by Sgt 1st class Mark Churchill.
Fri., 11/16, 6:30 pm: “Why We Fight,” 2005 Grand Jury Prize Sundance Film Festival winner. Documentary analyzes factors that impel military engagement abroad. Eugene Jarecki, Director, present for Q&A after the film.
Sat. 11/17, 9:30am-2pm: Friends of Brownell Deep Autumn Book Sale- Stock up Dark Winter Nights’ Reading! Library Lower Level

Wed., 11/28, 7pm: Mark Twain Talks Tonight! Actor Bern Budd-brings Mark Twain to Essex Junction. Twain will speak of his tour of the country-and the world-when he entertained packed houses with his wit, wisdom, and musery. Twain’ humorous, wise and slightly irreverent counsel is needed today as it was then. Free & Open to the Public ages 10-100. Sponsored by the Vt. Humanities Council.
11/1-30: Drop off needed items (list available) for care packages for Have a Heart/Adopt a Soldier in the Kolvoord Room.

Fall Story Times! Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance is encouraged. Space is limited in each group, to avoid overcrowding.
Here’s the schedule:
Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, and puppets for toddlers with an adult. (Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27)
Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets, and math activities for preschoolers. (Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27)
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (Nov. 7, 14, 21, 28)
Fri., 11/2 & 11/16, 10-10:45am: Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by Friends of Brownell Library.
Wed., 11/7, 9am: DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956.
Wed., 11/7, 9am: Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register.
Thurs., 11/8, 3-4pm: Teen Advisory Board – Come meet our new Young Adult Librarian! New teen members always welcome, to help us plan programs for youth. Munchies served.
Fri., 11/9 & 11/30, 10-10:30am: New Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers are welcome to come listen to Picture Book Stories and have fun with Finger Plays and Action Rhymes. No registration required.
Fri., 11/9, 6:30-8:30pm: Teen Movie: “Edward Scissorhands” – Johnny Depp plays Edward, a sad young man created by an inventor whose untimely death left Edward with shears for hands. (Rated PG-13.) Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.
Sat., 11/10, Noon-1pm: Read to Clyde & Sara, Therapy Dogs – Clyde (a Maltese) and Sara (a Chocolate Lab) love to listen to kids read aloud! Sign up now to read to Clyde or Sara for 10 minutes & listen while others read. For Gr. K-5. Call 878-6956.
Thurs., 11/15, 3:30-4:30pm: Read to Dieter, Therapy Dog – Come meet our new after-school pooch. Dieter is a Yellow Lab who is a trained Therapy Dog. He will listen to you read any book you choose. Sign up now at 878-6956. For Gr. K-5.
Fri., 11/30, 6:30-8:30pm: Family Movie: “Fly Away Home” – The soaring adventure of a girl and her estranged father, who learn what family is all about when they teach an orphaned flock of geese to fly. (Rated PG.) Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.
