Mon. 4/5, 7:30pm – The Cosmic Anomaly Wheel-an Astronomy Game hosted by Jack St. Louis. Jeopardy-style game w/ a twist, get a correct answer, the Cosmic Anomaly Wheel can change your points standing! You can even get every question wrong and still win thanks to the Cosmic Anomaly Wheel! There will be prizes awarded to the winners. The top winner will get a nice eyepiece that was donated to the club by Ron Anstey. The questions are on general topics in astronomy and related fields. Come play!

Wed., 4/7, 6pm – Community Dinner (bring a dessert) & 7pm Village Meeting at E.H.S. Vote on the budget that supports all the village departments, including Brownell Library.

Mon., 4/12, 3 pm – Travelogue of India and Nepal by veteran traveler Martha Lang.
Wed., 4/14, 7 pm – The Basics of Making Books with our own Martha Penzer. Do you have a manuscript of a collection of poetry, a memoir, or even a novel that you want published? Publish it yourself! Learn how to make hand-bound, limited edition books. Each participant shall produce a small book. Please reserve your place: 878-6955.

Fri., 4/16, 6:30-8:30pm – Adult Movie: “Julie & Julia” [123 min., PG 13] Julia Childs’ story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with Julie Powells’. A frustrated insurance worker who aspires to be a writer, Powells challenges herself to cook all the recipes in Childs first book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and to blog about the experience.

Wed., 4/28, 6pm – Dine & Discuss, Resilient Spirits: Overcoming Adversity the World Over. Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. This novel unfolds in the northeastern Himalayas at the foot of Mount Kenchenjunga, where an embittered old judge is looking forward to retirement when his orphaned granddaughter, Sai, arrives on his doorstep. Discussion led by Smita Narachania. Mon., 4/12, 6:30-8:30pm – Bee Literate: Spelling Bee Fundraiser for Literacy Cheer on your favorite team of Teens, Librarians, or Trustees as they spell their way to victory. Donate, buy sweet treats, or participate in our raffle to help raise money for literacy initiatives for Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program and Brownell Library Youth Programs.
Tues., 4/20, 3-4:30pm – Teen Theatre: Transitions We all experience transitions (moving, changing school, questioning who you are, changing your hair, body, self…). Work with Kat and others teens to develop a theatre piece focused on this theme and these experiences. Writing and rehearsals will continue into the following months. Gr. 6-12.

Wed. 4/21, 3:30-4:30pm – It's All Greek to Me! Learn about Ancient Greece, its famous philosophers and mythic heroes. Professor Mark Usher, Chair of the Classics Dept. at UVM, will share Wise Guy: The Life and Philosophy of Socrates and his new book, Diogenes, about a dog who moves to Athens to teach other dogs a new way of life. For fans of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, plus all other Kids in Gr. 3 and up. Books for sale at the program. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs. 4/29, 1-2pm – Bike Ride on the Essex Bike Path Kids and Parents, meet us at a parking lot in Essex (TBA) for a Spring Vacation Bike Ride. We’ll talk about Bike Safety, and look for signs of spring as we enjoy the views on the Essex Bike Path. Helmets required for all riders. For kids in Gr. K-5 with an adult rider. Fri. 4/30, 10-10:45am – The Swing Peepers Matthew Witten & John Hadden, recent Artists-in-Residence at Summit Street School, are here to sing and goof off with the Spring Vacation Crowd! Come sing the songs you composed and performed with the Peeps. No experience necessary, but laughing is required!!

Wed., 3/3, 7pm – Making Room for Cars & People – A Discussion. Robin Pierce, Village Development Director, presents a proposal for a village center, focusing on moving traffic through Five Corners efficiently, reducing congestion, encouraging economic development, and making the center more pedestrian friendly. This is an extension of the Feb. 10th Village Forum. All welcome!

Mon., 3/29, 7-8pm – Social-Networking Explained! – Wendy and Kat help clarify the mysterious and bizarre world of online social-networking. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter…figure out what all the buzz is about. They will also discuss the safety of social-networking sites. Teen panel will address questions and concerns.


Wed. 3/31, 7pm – The Irish Wave in the Green Mountains – Vincent Feeney, author of Finnigans, Slaters & Stonepeggers: A History of the Irish in Vermont speaks on the thousands of Irish immigrants who poured into Vt. after 1840 just as the state was undergoing a mini industrial revolution: railroad construction, quarrying and textile production. Rutland Town in 1870 was 35% Irish. Sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.

Cycle of Oppositions coming Near Earth. Upcoming one one of the worst for planetary watchers –not coming very close. Learn some tricks of the trade to get the best views.

Wed., 11/4, 3:30 pm – Martha Lang’s travelogue on her trip to Beijing, China-including the Great Wall, The Forbidden City, and the Olympic Stadium plus all the wonderful stories about the people she met along the way. There will be a Powerpoint presentation with a display of souvenirs.

Wed., 11/11 Library Closed for Veterans Day BUT!! 5:15 pm a yellow school bus will take opera lovers or opera “newbies” to Palace 9 Cinema in South Burlington for Metropolitan Opera HD performance of Verdi’s Aida. (Synopsis of plot: an Ethiopian princess Aida, is captured and brought into slavery in Egypt. A military commander, Radames, struggles to choose between his love for her and his loyalty to the Pharaoh. To complicate the story further, Radames is loved by the Pharaoh's daughter Amneris, although he does not return her feelings). The opera premiered in Cairo, Egypt in 1871. Cost of $27.50 includes the roundtrip bus ride, opera admission, a lively briefing by our local opera expert Toni Hill and some chocolate truffles during intermission. Guarantee your place at the show, register before October 28 with a check for $27.50 payable to the Friends of Brownell Library. Bus limited to 42 seats.

Fri., 11/13, 6:30 – Adult Move: “Turtles Can Fly” (2004), 98 min., PG-13, in Kurdish with subtitles. Set in a refugee camp just before the second Gulf War, using non-professional actors, this film shows the resilience and enterprise of children. Critically acclaimed.

Mon., 11/16 7pm – UVM Prof. Saleem Ali presents his important book Treasures of the Earth: Need, Greed and a Sustainable Future published by Yale University Press, launched at the National Geographic Society. “The history of human relationships with Earth's resources is an important story, and Ali tells it from an extraordinarily wide perspective,” comments Thomas Graede of Yale University. The Essex community can be proud of this local acclaimed author. Books available for autographing. Free and open to the public.

Bill will discuss the origin and evolution of his own stories and book, how stories endure in communities and cultures and answer questions about how best to articulate and preserve one’s own stories. He will read a few couple of passages and will be happy to sign books as well.
