BROWNELL LIBRARY ~ ADULT PROGRAMS

Mon. June 18 through August 24 - Summer Sleuthing @ Brownell Library: A summer reading program for Adults Why should the kids have all the fun?? Pick up your Evidence Bag containing a reader’s log, a bookmark of some mysteries to try, plus an entry form for Where in the World is Brownella? contest. Events happening all summer to entice readers. Check out the weekly mystery genre tree near Adult Circ desk and try a new type of whodunit.

Mon July 2- 7:30pm Model Rocketry: Estes to High Power Speaker Howard Druckerman - Vt. Astronomical Society (VAS) & Champlain Region Model Rocket Club (CRMRC) host joint meeting.

Fri. July 20 at 6:30 – Adult Mystery Movie: “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” - In this hilarious classic, former Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus has gone off his rocker, building a massive doomsday machine and threatening to take over the world. The fate of the world’s freedom rests in the hands of the new Chief Inspector, the famous French detective Jacques Clouseau.

Mon. July 23 5:30-8:30pm - NEW EVENT Summer Friends of Brownell Library Midsummer Evening Book Sale - Library Lower Level – Hardcover $1.50 and Softcover $.75. Save a Tree, bring a bag.

Summer Reading Program – “Get a Clue @ Your Library” – Unless otherwise noted, summer reading programs require registration in advance:

Mondays July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 2-3pm – Reading Buddies – Kids in Gr. K-5 read to Teen Mentors. Sign up in advance.

Monday, July 2 – Young Adult Summer Reading Program begins. Sign up at Youth Desk.

“Booked for Lunch” series - Bring a bag lunch and listen to a librarian read picture book mysteries, both funny and spooky. We supply dessert! For ages 5 up. Choose 1 from these 4 dates:
Thurs. July 5, 11:30-12:30 – “The Bad Bear Detectives” and other stories…
Thurs. July 12, 11:30-12:30 – “The Mystery of King Karfu” and other stories…
Thurs. July 19, 11:30-12:30 – “Gertrude, the Bulldog Detective” and other stories…
Thurs. July 26, 11:30-12:30 – “The Mystery of Eatum Hall” and other stories…

Thurs. July 5, 3-5pm – Teen Advisory Board - For teens, by teens. New members always welcome to help us plan what we do for activities. This month we also give feedback to the Trustees for their 5 year plan. Snacks, too! No registration required.

Fridays at 10am, July 6 & 20 - Songs and Stories with Matthew - Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration required. Funded by the Friends of Brownell Library.

Mon.-Fri., July 9-13 – “Mystery Word Week” - Find the Mystery Word in a book to win a free creamee from Rocky’s in Essex Junction. 100 winners – for independent readers only! Word announced Monday.

Mon. July 9 & 23, 7-8pm – Read to Meagan, Therapy Dog - A new Therapy Dog is visiting this summer. Meagan is a West Highland Terrier who loves to listen to kids read. Take turns reading for 10 minutes. For kids entering Gr. K & up.

Tues. July 10, 2-3pm – “Penelope Peabody Is Missing” - In this interactive program, Storyteller Tom Stamp gets help from the audience to solve the mystery of the kidnapping. For kids entering Gr. 1 up.

July 11, 18, 25 & Aug. 1, 2-3pm – Chess for Kids - Join the Chess Lovers from our Teen Advisory Board for an hour of play. We provide the chess sets & you provide the strategy. For Gr. 4-8.

Wed. July 11, 7-8pm – Mystery Princess Story Time - We’ll read The 12 Dancing Princesses and create our own cut-out princess, then perform a mystery story about them. Manicures, too! For kids entering Gr. 1-5.

Thurs. July 12th, 3-4pm – High School Book Lust Pizza Club - Come chat about whatever book you happen to be reading right now and have pizza too! This month’s Book Lust will be for High Schoolers, next month for Middle Schoolers. Call 878-6956 so we know how much pizza to order.

Fri. July 13, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “The Birds” - Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror film of menacing birds who attack humans. Rated PG-13. Hosted by the Teen Advisory Board, with popcorn served. No registration required.

Tues. July 17, 2-3pm at Rec. Dept. Pavilion on Maple Street – Teddy Bear Picnic with The Swing Peepers - Bring your favorite bear or stuffed toy to hear Matthew Witten’s musical duo sing songs and tell amazing stories. Refreshments served by Friends of Brownell Library. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. For all ages.

Wed. July 18, 4-5pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads for Kids: Mystery Meal - NECI Student Chefs want you to identify mystery foods just from their smells. Then you will taste some dishes with only 3 ingredients, and you can guess what they are. The chefs will read a culinary mystery. For kids entering Gr. K-5.

Thurs. July 19, 3-5pm – Mystery Scavenger Hunt - Be a Super Sleuth and hunt for a bunch of facts and objects. Find them all and win a prize book. Librarians will help you with your search. Sign up for your own half hour: 2-2:30, 2:30-3:00, 3-3:30, or 3:30-4pm. For kids entering Gr. 2 up.

Tues. July 24, 1-1:45pm – Jake the Snake - Naturalist Steve Amos brings Jake, a 21 year old, nine-foot boa constrictor, to teach about the behavior of snakes. Jake likes to be held! For kids entering Gr. 1-6.

Wed. July 25, 7-8pm – Estimation Story Time - Be a Number Detective and uncover the mystery of estimation. Have fun learning the process and practicing your skills with jelly beans and other items. Children should be able to count in multiples (5’s, 10’s, and 100’s). For kids entering Gr. 1-4.

Fri. July 27, 6:30-8pm – Family Movie: “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit”
- Hilarious claymation film with Wallace trying to stop rabbits from raiding the gardens. Rated G. Hosted by TAB, with popcorn served. No registration required.

Mon. July 30, 11-11:30am – Ash Brittenham Reads “The Adventures of SuperMax” - Ash is a 9 year old author who wrote a book about how his German Shepherd develops the ability to fly. Copies of his book will be available for sale, with all proceeds to benefit Muscular Dystrophy research. For all ages.

Tues. July 31, 11-11:45am – Visit the Vermont Lake Monsters - Come meet players from our local minor league team, the Lake Monsters, who will autograph your glove or ball. For kids entering Gr. 1 up.

Thurs. Aug. 2, 2-3pm @ A.D. Lawton School – Our Final Summer Reading Party - No Strings Marionette Company performs “Nick of Time,” - a puppet show in outer space. Kids get an achievement certificate and a free book. Register starting July 23 - For all kids who show us their Reading Records.

Brownell Library Events Calendar~June 2007

Mon. 6/4, 7pm Chittenden and Addison County Light Pollution Report by Doug Woos, Jacob Miller and Ethan Leveillee, students from Mt. Abraham Union HS, are using SQM (Sky Quality Meter) for a light pollution survey. They will present their findings, including light pollution maps and a guide for future light pollution studies in Vermont. Co-sponsored by the Vermont Astronomical Society and the Brownell Library. Free and open to the public.

For 1st time in 110 years, adults can sign up for their very own Summer Reading Program- Carry home your Evidence Bag containing a reader’s log, a bookmark of suggested mysteries and an entry form for Where in the World is Brownella? Contest (See Below!). Check out the weekly Mystery Genre Tree All Summer, Find a new gumshoe to admire.


Tues. 6/19, 3pm - Digital Forensics: Everything Leaves a Trace in Cyberspace: explained by Dr. Gary Kessler Computers are the most rapidly growing technology being employed by criminals, and computers are increasingly the target, instrument, and/or record keeper of criminal activity. This talk will provide a definition of digital forensics, discussing legal aspects, the cyberforensics process, and some real-life examples. Open to all ages. Summer Sleuthing @ Brownell ,”

Friday. 6/22, 6:30pm - Movie "The Thin Man." The Thin Man is a comedy/mystery in which former detective Nick Charles and his playful wife Nora solve a mystery. It was nominated for four oscars, including best picture.

Youth: “Get a Clue @ Your Library” – 2007 Summer Reading Program







Calling all Super Sleuths and Daring Detectives! Solve the Mystery of the Boring Summer by making tracks to Brownell Library to join us as we “Get a Clue @ Your Library” all summer long! You can beat the heat in air-conditioned comfort as you search for the perfect book, from our collection of thousands. Each week we offer a variety of fascinating programs for kids of all ages.

Registration begins June 18. Each child receives the “Get a Clue” Reading Record and a Mystery Gift! Every time you bring in your Reading Record, we’ll count the books you read or listen to, give you a special sticker, and add your books to our group total. Watch our Book Count grow along the wall in the library.

“Get a Clue” T-Shirts will be sold for $3.50 starting June 18. Limited number available: Child’s Small (6-8), Medium (10-12) or Large (14-16). Checks payable to: The Friends of Brownell Library. No advance orders.

All programs are free. Some have Grade Levels. Programs underlined require registration in advance. Space is limited for some events. Starting June 18, come to the library (preferred) or call 878-6956.

June 18 onward – Signups begin for “Get a Clue” and go on all summer. Put your name on a Magnifying Glass or a Detective Badge to add to our Giant Wall of Super Sleuths. For all ages – Pre-readers, too.

All Summer – “Where in the World Is Brownella?” Brownella is traveling all around the world. Look on the Bulletin Board in the Young Adult Room to see a new photo each week. Make a guess of her location and write your answer on the sheet. At the end of the summer, we’ll draw winners from all the correct entries.

All Summer – Adopt a Beanie Pet Want a cool pet of your own? Adopt one of our cute critters for a week. Keep a daily journal to share with us. Sign up at Youth Desk. For kids entering Gr. 2 up.

Tues. 6/19, 1-2pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Berry Wonderful The Student Chefs from NECI prepare mouth-watering strawberry shortcakes and read some berry good books. For kids entering Gr. K & up.

Thurs. 6/21, 2-3pm – “The Marvels and Mysteries of Color” Fleming Museum’s Art Program explores the origin and symbolism of colors, with slides and an art activity. For kids entering Gr. 1 up.

Thurs. 6/21, 3-4pm – Middle School Book Lovers Pizza Club Come chat about any book you happen to be reading right now! This month is for students going into Gr. 6-8. Call 878-6956 so we can order enough pizza.

Wed. 6/27, 10:30-11:15am – “Jack and the Beanstalk” & “Chicken Little” The Traveling Storyteller’s teen troupe, Backpack Theater, presents fairy tale puppet shows. “Fee Fi and Oh my!” For all ages.

Fri. 6/29, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “Hoodwinked” Little Red Riding Hood gets turned upside-down in this animated tale of the investigation at Granny’s house. Rated PG. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.
