Adult Programs

Wed. 11/1, 7pm- J. Kevin Graffagnino, VHS Director presents “The Shaping of Vermont: Early Vermont Maps & Mapmakers," a slide/narrative version of his 1983 book, The Shaping of Vermont: From the Wilderness to the Centennial, 1750-1877, which used the maps as jumping-off points for discussing various aspects of Vermont history through the 1877 centennial of independence. Free and Open to the Public. Meeks Lecture Series.

Mon. 11/6. 4-7pm. Reception honoring Brownell Library Director Penny Pillsbury. Come celebrate Penny’s 20th anniversary as Brownell Library Director. Join members of the Brownell Library Community in the Kolvoord Room where a festive atmosphere and snacks will be provided.

Wed. 11/8, 7pm. Vermont author Carla Neggers enjoys a successful career as a romantic suspense novelist. According to a Publishers Weekly reviewer, she "keeps the reader guessing ‘whodunit’ to the end of her intriguing novel…” Ms. Neggers will speak about her recent bestseller The Widow and answer any questions. There will be books for purchasing and the author will be available to sign them!

Thu. 11/9, 7pm Natalie Kinsey-Warnock AT THE RICHMOND FREE LIBRARY will speak on “As Long As There Are Mountains”-Vermont Reads 2006 title about Iris the 13 year old Vermont farm-girl. Don’t miss this BOOK! Sponsored by the Vt. Humanities Council.

Wed. 11/15, 7pm UVM Emeritus Prof. Samuel Hand’s Book Discussion of The Essential Aiken –A Life in Public Service. George Aiken, a wildflower farmer and former governor of Vermont was a leader in the US Senate. Books available at Adult Circ Desk. Meeks Lecture Series.

Fri. 11/17, 6-8:45pm Friends of Brownell SPECIAL FRIDAY NITE BOOK SALE! Come on Down to the Book Room for a book bargain.

Wed. 11/29, 7pm Beyond “200 Years of Soot & Sweat”, author & Vermont’s industrial archeologist Victor Rolando will discuss sites discovered since he wrote the book in 1992. Vermont was famous for iron and potash production in the 19th century. Plenty of time for questions. Meeks Series.

Youth Programs

Wed. 11/1, 9am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956 to register.

Wed. 11/1, 9am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register.

Thurs. 11/2, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board Meeting – Help plan December’s events at the library! Snacks! New members welcome.

Fri. 11/3 & 11/17, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Kids of all ages will enjoy Matthew’s lighthearted songs and improvisational stories. Lots of audience participation! No registration required.

Fri. 11/3, 6:30-8:30pm –Family Movie Night: “Hoot” (PG) – Come enjoy this great family movie based on the popular children’s book Hoot. Free popcorn and movie on the big screen. Space may be limited. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Mon. 11/13, 11/20 & 11/27, 6:00-7:30pm – Beginning with Mother Goose – A reading and activity program for parents with children ages Birth to 3 years. Participants receive 9 free books. Hosted by Essex Early Childhood Connection. To register, call Sarah at 879-9422.

Tues. 11/14, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: CORN – The NECI Student Chefs will share some history of this American crop, read some fun stories, and prepare a few tasty corn treats for you! For kids in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs. 11/16, 3-4pm – Book Lust Pizza Club – Come enjoy some fresh pizza and bring a book that you have recently read to share with the group! It’s a great time and all teens are welcome. Call to register @ 878-6956.

Fri. 11/17, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie Night: “Sky High” (PG) - This is a fun superhero movie set in the future about an aspiring young superhero that only has one problem, that he hasn’t yet discovered his super power! Fri. 11/17, 7-8pm – Green Mountain Book Club for High School Students – This month we are reading My Heartbeat by Garret Freymann-Weyr and Swimming to Antarctica (non fiction) by Lynn Cox, two titles from the GMBA nomination list. Pick up a copy of the book at the Youth Desk and join us on the 17th to discuss these great books. Call to register @ 878-6956.

Sat. 11/18, 10-11am – Read to Clyde & Sara – Clyde (a Maltese) and Sara (a Chocolate Lab) are trained Therapy Dogs who love to listen to children read! Sign up now to read to Clyde or Sara for 10 minutes & listen while others read. Bring a book or find one here! Sign up at Youth Desk. For Gr. K-5.

Attention 9th-12th Graders! Do you enjoy drawing & creating artwork? Enter the Green Mountain Book Award LOGO CONTEST. The logo has to be about reading and include the words “Green Mountain Book Award” or the initials “GMBA”. Your logo design must be original artwork (no copyrighted images) in B&W only and no bigger than 81/2” X 11”.
