Mon. 12/3, 7:30pm: Astro Images by Ron Anstey-VT Astronomical Society. Have you ever wanted to take images of your favorite astronomical objects? Ron Anstey explains the basics for producing astro images. He will explain the basics of digital astro imaging from a simple camera tripod combination to advanced imaging using a equatorial telescope with drives to follow the stars. Ron will display fantastic and colorful images of star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. Open to all ages interested in astronomy. 878-6955.

Tues. 12/4, 3:30pm: Stories of Light and Dark Not for Little Kids [ie. What Really Happened to Sleeping Beauty!] by Storyteller Linda Costello; she’ll tell stories for the time of year when a good, scary, fairy tale or ghost story can hearken back to your childhood during the dark season. Ages High School and Up.

Fri. 12/7, 3pm: Love and War: The 1941-1943 World War II letters of Nancy Duncan-A one-hour presentation by Curt Taylor of his mother’s unpublished letters. Less than two weeks after Pearl Harbor, Nancy Duncan found herself aboard a troop ship heading for Iceland- one of 10 Red Cross workers on board. Howard Taylor, a young lieutenant, was one of 2500 soldiers aboard the same ship. Their story of meeting, love, and life they lived in wartime Iceland and Great Britain is the subject of nearly 200 surprisingly frank letters, v-mails and postcards received and saved. Her son will relate letters’s story and answer questions. Transcribed letters available one week before the talk and for a month after. Must be read at the library and not copied. Mr. Taylor will also make available several books relating to Iceland, the Red Cross, and the 50th Signal Battalion during World War II. Free and Open to the public. Fri. 12/14, 5:30-8:30 pm: Friends of Brownell Library are opening the Book Sale room for a Special After-Supper Book Sale to aid gift shoppers and to help the Friends of the Library provide programs for all ages. Bring a bag, save a tree.

Fall Story Times! Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance is encouraged. Space is limited in each group, to avoid overcrowding.

Here’s the schedule:
Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, and puppets for toddlers with an adult. (Dec. 4, 11, 18)
Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets, and math activities for preschoolers. (Dec. 4, 11, 18)
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (Dec. 5, 12, 19)

Wed. 12/5, 9am: DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956.

Wed. 12/5, 9am: Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register.

Thurs. 12/6, 3-4pm: Teen Advisory Board – Come join us as we get ready for our Holiday Gift-Making Program for Kids. We’ll practice a variety of crafts that kids can make for family gifts on Dec. 17. New teen members always welcome. Munchies served.

Fri. 12/7 & 12/21: 10-10:30am: New Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers are welcome to come listen to Picture Book Stories and have fun with Finger Plays and Action Rhymes. No registration required.

Tue. 12/11, 3:30-4:30pm: NECI’s Tasty Reads: Gingerbread Boys and Girls – Join the NECI Student Chefs to decorate your own Gingerbread Boy or Girl. The chefs will read some interesting variations of the classic Gingerbread Boy story. For Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs. 12/13, 3-4pm: High School Book Lust Pizza Club – Come chat about whatever book you’re reading right now and have pizza too! This month’s program for High Schoolers, next month Middle Schoolers. Call 878-6956.

Thurs. 12/13, 3:30-4:30pm: Read to Dieter, Therapy Dog – Come meet our new after-school pooch. Dieter is a Yellow Lab who is a trained Therapy Dog. He will listen to you read any book you choose. Sign up now at 878-6956. For Gr. K-5.

Fri. 12/14, 10-10:45am: Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by Friends of Brownell Library.

Fri. 12/14, 6:30-8:30pm: Teen Movie: “The Princess Bride” – A classic fairy tale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and a handsome young hero, all in a book read by a kindly grandfather. (Rated PG.) . Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by Teen Advisory Board.

Mon. 12/17, 7-9pm: Saturnalia – Join the Essex High School Classics Club to celebrate the ancient Roman festival of Saturnalia, which honored Saturn, the god of agriculture. Feasting, togas, and general merriment will prevail. For Teens - Please register at 878-6956.

Mon. 12/17, 3:15-4:15pm OR 4:15-5:15pm:Holiday Gift-Making for Kids – Kids in Grades 1-5 can come to make holiday gifts for family members. Teens will supervise free gift-making and wrapping. Choose your 1-hour session and sign up now at 878-6956. Space limited.

Mon., 11/ 5, 7pm: Vt Astronomical Society Presents: Model Rocketry by Howard (Howie) Druckerman. Howie flew Estes model rockets as a kid, and again with his kids when they were young. He discovered the world of medium and high power rocketry and is back flying much larger rockets along with the model ones. Free and Open to the public.


Wed., 11/ 7, 7 pm: Discussion of Atonement by Ian McEwan led by Charlie Purinton, Vermont National Guard Chaplain. The novel unfolds partly during evacuation of allied forces at Dunkirk in 1940.
