Adult Programs

Mon., 3/1, 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29 & Thurs, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25 - 9:15am, 10am, 10:45am, 11:30 time slots. – Free Tax Help: for taxpayers w/low and middle incomes, especially those age 60 and older. Volunteer AARP foundation certified expert tax preparers Tak and Dorothy Ng will help. Sign up for a 30 minute appointment by calling 878-6955 or by dropping by the library’s circulation desk. Program available on Monday & Thursday mornings until April 15th. Reserve your place for tax-preparation.

Mon., 3/1, 7:30pm – Black Holes, Worm Holes And the Star Trek Dilemma by Al Boudreau on the physical nature of these enigmas that curdle our visual imaginations. Are they the ultimate drain from which nothing returns? Why didn’t Einstein believe they could exist? Can they reach out and grab us? Is “Capt Kirk” in real trouble?? All levels welcome.


Wed., 3/3, 7pm – Making Room for Cars & People – A Discussion. Robin Pierce, Village Development Director, presents a proposal for a village center, focusing on moving traffic through Five Corners efficiently, reducing congestion, encouraging economic development, and making the center more pedestrian friendly. This is an extension of the Feb. 10th Village Forum. All welcome!

Wed., 3/17, 7pm – Stages of Senior Care: a step-by-step guide to making the best decisions - a talk by Karen Koechlein, a community service rep from Home Instead Senior Care who will encourage the public to understand the options and make a long range plan for seniors who will ultimately need care.


Fri., 3/19, 6:30pm – Adult Movie: “Casablanca” (1942 classic) – In WW2 Morocco, teeming with European refugees desperate for passage to neutral Lisbon, only a world-weary and bitter nightclub owner can help his former lover and her Resistance-hero husband escape the Nazis.

Mon., 3/22, 7 pm – How to Survive a Honeymoon on Two Wheels: A Couple’s Motorcycle Adventure in Central America - presentation by Debby and David of Green Mountain Harley-Davidson.


Wed., 3/24, 6-9pm – Dine & Discuss, Resilient Spirits: Overcoming Adversity the World Over. Grey is the Color of Hope by Irina Ratushiskaya. This memoir recalls life in the Soviet gulag. Discussion led by Judge Ed Cashman. Share a dish inspired by the text. Phone 878-6955 to reserve a book and place.

Mon., 3/29, 7-8pm – Social-Networking Explained! – Wendy and Kat help clarify the mysterious and bizarre world of online social-networking. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter…figure out what all the buzz is about. They will also discuss the safety of social-networking sites. Teen panel will address questions and concerns.


Wed. 3/31, 7pm – The Irish Wave in the Green Mountains – Vincent Feeney, author of Finnigans, Slaters & Stonepeggers: A History of the Irish in Vermont speaks on the thousands of Irish immigrants who poured into Vt. after 1840 just as the state was undergoing a mini industrial revolution: railroad construction, quarrying and textile production. Rutland Town in 1870 was 35% Irish. Sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.

Youth Programs

Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance encouraged. Space is limited to avoid overcrowding. Call to register: 878-6956

Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes & puppets for toddlers with an adult. (March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30)

Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets & math activities for preschoolers. (March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30)

Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31)



Wed., 3/3, 9am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in the spring. Group discussion encouraged! Call 878-6956.

Wed., 3/3, 9am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in the spring. For Gr. K-3. Call 878-6956 to register

Fri., 3/5 & 3/19, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by the Friends of Brownell Library.

Tues., 3/9, 3-4:30pm – Teen Advisory Board – For teens, by teens. Plan programs you’d like to see, suggest books and DVDs you would like in the collection, have fun, bring friends. Snacks provided! New members always welcome. Gr. 9-12.

Thurs., 3/11, 3-4:30pm – Wii-tastic – Come try our new Wii Game System! MarioKart, Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play! For Gr. 4 & up. Register at 878-6956.

Fri., 3/12 & 3/26, 10-10:30am – Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Fun Picture Books! No registration required. For all Preschoolers.

Fri., 3/12, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “Star Trek” (2009 version) – The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. A chronicle of the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members. Popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB. (PG-13).

Sat., 3/13, 2-4pm – YA Writing Share – Bring whatever writing you’re working on to share and receive constructive feedback from fellow teen writers. Also, play with words using some creative prompts and writing exercises. Gr. 6-12

Mon., 3/15, 3:30-4:30pm – Collage Art – Celebrate Youth Art Month with your friends. Join Kat and Teen Artists and create fun collages with a variety of materials. Gr. 4-12.

Wed. 3/17, 3:30-4:15pm – Irish Tales with Linda Costello – Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Storyteller Linda Costello, who will entertain with a variety of Irish tales. It will be lucky for you to be in the audience! For kids in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Thurs., 3/18, 3:30-4:30pm – MPH (Middle School Planners and Helpers) – Students in Gr. 6-8 come and help re-design the YA room, help out with cool projects, and talk about what’s on your minds! Snacks too!

Sat., 3/20, 10-10:45am – Read to Sara, Therapy Dog – Sara is a Chocolate Lab who loves to listen to kids read! Her owner is an elementary teacher who will help you find a book to read to Sara, or you can bring one from home. For kids in Gr. K & up. Register at 878-6956.

Tues., 3/23, 3-4:30pm – Teen Theatre: Transitions – We all experience transitions (moving, changing school, questioning who you are, changing your hair, body, self…). Work with Kat and others teens to develop a theatre piece focused on this theme and these experiences. Writing and rehearsals will continue into the following months. Gr. 6-12.
Thurs., 3/25, 3:30-4:30pm – Middle School Book Lovers Club — Come chat with Kat about your favorite books! Snacks served. Gr. 6-8.
Fri., 3/26, 6:30-8:30pm – Family Movie: “Night at the Museum” – A new night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits to come to life. Popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB. (PG)
