“Mostly” Adult Programs

Mon., 3/2, 7:30pm - Rocketry Materials and Construction Techniques That Can Be Applied to Telescope Building by Howard Druckerman will show how rocketry uses some tubing materials and construction techniques to create home-made telescopes, ie, cardboard tubes to high tech composites. All levels welcome. Sponsors: Brownell Lib & Vt. Astronomical Society.

Wed., 3/4, 6:15pm - *Let’s Talk About It: Love and Forgiveness in the Presence of the Enemy – Discuss Embers by Sandor Marai; dine over Austro-Hungarian pot-luck. Books available for borrowing. Prof. Jane Ambrose enriches our understanding of the text.

Thu., 3/5, 12, 19, 26, 9:15am-12:15pm – Free Tax Help: for taxpayers w/low and middle incomes, those age 60 and older - Volunteer and expert tax preparer Tak Ng will help. Sign up for a 30 minute appointment by calling 878-6955 or by dropping by the library’s circulation desk. Program available on Thursday mornings until April 9th.

Mon., 3/16, 6:30 pm – *Let’s Talk About It: Love and Forgiveness screening of “Gandhi My Father” [2007 (135 min.)], an Indian film directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, that explores the Mahatma’s fraught relationship with his eldest son, Harilal. Visually stunning. In Hindi & English.

Wed., 3/18, 5:305 pm - “Madama Butterfly” by Puccini – School bus trek from Brownell to Palace 9 Cinema – an HD showing of Metropolitan Opera production, a 20 minute Madama lesson by expert Toni Hill, chocolate truffles at intermission. Total Price $27.50 all inclusive. Register by bringing a check payable to Friends of Brownell Library by March 12th for guaranteed seats. Latecomers take a chance; we are hoping for a full bus.

Fri. 3/20, 6:30-8:30pm –“ 451 Reasons Why...” – Can a book be a weapon? If so, should it be destroyed? Come debate these and other questions of censorship in an interactive mock town meeting. For questions, call 878-6856 or email Kat at kredniss@sover.net.

Sat., 3/21 through Fri 3/27 – Week-Long Friends of Brownell Library Book Sale. All library hours in lower level book room. BARGAINS GALORE!

Mon., 3/23, 7pm – Encore showing of the new documentary, Portraits of Five Vermont Artists, by filmmaker Deb Ellis premiered here last month. Features interviews with Vt. artists whose work targets social issues including performing artist Janice Perry, filmmakers Alan Dater and Lisa Merton, papermaker Drew Cameron, poet Major Jackson, and Bread & Puppet’s Peter Schumann. Deb Ellis will be present for Q & A. Part of the Big Read Programming.

Wed., 3/25, 7pm – Read and Recite: What would you Save, if Vermont Firemen Burned Books? – Inspired by Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, come together with other community members to recite or read a passage from your saved book. Part of the Big Read Programming. For all ages. Refreshments will be served.

Thu., 3/26, 3:30-5pm – Conversations on Race - Barack Obama's 37 minute film of his poignant speech, "A More Perfect Union" delivering a heartfelt response to Rev. Wright's position on racism, followed by a facilitated, candid conversation on his speech, its bearing on us as individuals, friends, families and neighbors in Vermont. Suggested questions will be available and encouraged in relaxed and safe environment-a sharing and thoughtful dialogue.

Youth Events

Story Times are offered on a weekly basis – regular attendance is encouraged. Space is limited in each group, to avoid overcrowding. Pre-registration required. Call 878-6956. Here’s the schedule:
Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months) – 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, and puppets for toddlers with an adult. (March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31)
Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets, and math activities for preschoolers. (March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31)
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds – 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1)

Mon., 3/2, 4-5pm – Origami – Fold a triangle, crease your imagination, and share your nimble mind! Sun Park teaches Origami to students in Gr. 2 & up. Materials provided. Register at 878-6956.

Wed., 3/4, 9-9:45am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Each month, students in Gr. 4-8 hear book talks of 4 titles from this year’s DCF list. Students keep a log and vote for their favorite to win the DCF Book Award in April. Group discussion. 878-6956.

Wed. 3/4, 9-9:45am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – Each month, students read and do activities with 2 of the 10 titles on the list for this year’s Red Clover Award. Voting takes place in April. For Gr. K-3. Register at 878-6956.

Fri., 3/6 & 20, 10-10:30am – Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers are welcome to come listen to Picture Book Stories and have fun with Finger Plays and Action Rhymes. No registration required.

Mon., 3/9, 16, 23, & 30, 3:30-4:00pm – Reading Buddies - Girl Scouts are looking for students in Grades K-3 to be their Reading Buddies. This service project for the Girl Scouts happens at the library on Mondays from 3:30-4:00pm. Register at the Youth Desk.

Mon., 3/9, 3:30-4:305pm – Teen Advisory Board – Snacks provided! New members always welcome. Gr. 9-12.

Tues., 3/10, 17, 24, & 31, 3:30-5pm – *CONFRONT THE HATE: an Interactive Community Theatre Project - Together we’ll create, rehearse, and perform an interactive theatre piece addressing the issues of school bullying, youth violence, and hate crimes. Thurs., 3/12, 3:30-4:30pm –MPH (Middle school Planners and Helpers) – Students in Gr. 6-8 come and help re-design the YA room, help out with cool projects, and talk about what’s on your minds! Snacks too! Gr.6-8.

Fri., 3/13 & 27, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by Friends of Brownell Library.

Fri., 3/13, 6:30-8:15pm – Teen Movie: “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” – The Pevensie siblings return to Narnia, where they are enlisted to restore the rightful heir to the land's throne, Prince Caspian. (Rated PG.) Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by the Teen Advisory Board.

Thurs. 3/19, 3:30-4:30pm – High School Book Lust/Loathe – We’re dishing on the books we love and the books we love to hate!

Mon. 3/30, 4-5pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Incredible Eggs – Student chefs from New England Culinary Institute read stories about eggs and demonstrate techniques for cooking different kinds of eggs, culminating in an omelet. For Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.
