Adult Programming

Mon. 6/2, 7:30pm - VT Astronomical Society Program -Exoplanets and

Extraterrestrial Life - Astronomers are finding more and more places in other galaxies where life could exist. Al Bourdreau will discuss a scientific and very accessible treatment of extraterrestrial life using astronomical observations and various concepts which explore for signs of life.

Fri. 6/20, 6:30pm – Adult Movie: Cloverfield – This 2008 Sci-Fi film combines a first person camera view with a storyline that plays as a homage to 1950s “giant monster on the loose” movies. Yup, it's got bugs - big ones. The MPAA rated this film PG-13.

Wed. 6/25, 3:30-5:15pm – You are cordially invited: Anne of Green Gables Centennial High Tea worthy of Anne Shirley and author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Wear your puffed sleeves! Let’s read aloud our favorite chapters, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables June 13, 1908. We’re inviting the author to return from the “other side” and hope she’ll make an appearance. Reading & treats followed by:

Wed. 6/25, 5:30-8:45pm – Movie: Anne of Green Gables – An Emmy-winning Canadian film, starring Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst.Sat. 6/28, 1pm - Computer Tips, Tricks and Maintenance. Learn to tame your pesky PC! Ron & Ann Lewis, owners of Computer Care, will share their 12 years of PC taming knowledge with you. Learn the what and how of basic maintenance; Troubleshooting Techniques; Internet Security; Data Protection and more. Appropriate for users of all abilities. Notes/Outline included.

Thu. 6/5, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board – High school students plan events for teens at the library. New members welcome!

Fri. 6/6 & 20, 10-10:30am - Drop-In Story Time for Kids – Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers are welcome to come listen to Picture Book Stories and have fun with Finger Plays and Action Rhymes. No registration required.

Sat. 6/7, 10-11am – Read to Clyde and Sara – Young readers get lots of attention and even some licks when Clyde, a Maltese, and Sara, a Chocolate Lab, come in to listen to kids read stories. For Gr. K-5. Sign up at 878-6956.

Thu. 6/12, 3-4pm – High School Book Lust Pizza Club – Bring a book you have recently read to show the group. All high schoolers welcome.

Fri. 6/13 & 27, 10-10:45am - Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells funny tales. All ages.

Fri. 6/13, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “Arachnophobia” – A doctor who’s deathly afraid of spiders moves his family to a town where the disgusting arachnids are attacking people! Rated PG-13. Free popcorn & soda. Hosted by the Teen Advisory Board.

“Catch the Reading Bug” – 2008 Summer Reading Program

Calling all Busy Brownell Bees! Fly on over to Brownell Library to bug out all summer with us. You can beat the heat in air-conditioned comfort as you search for the perfect book, from our collection of thousands. Each week we offer a variety of fascinating programs for kids of all ages.

Registration begins June 18. Each child receives a “Catch the Reading Bug” Reading Record and a Doodle Bug Kit! Every time you bring in your Reading Record, we’ll count the books you read or listen to, give you a special sticker, and add your books to our group total. Watch our Buggy Book Count grow high up along the wall in the library. For all ages, including pre-readers.

Programs underlined require registration in advance. Space is limited for some programs. Starting Wed. June 18, come to the library (preferred) or call 878-6956. We’ll return calls as soon as possible. New this year: parents unable to attend registration on June 18 may ask another parent to bring in their requests for programs. (Please, only one additional family’s registration per parent.)

“Catch the Reading Bug” T-Shirts will be sold for $3.50 starting June 18. Limited number available: Child’s Small (6-8), Medium (10-12) or Large (14-16). Checks payable to: The Friends of Brownell Library. Sorry, no advance orders.

All Summer – Adopt a Beanie Pet
– Want a cool pet of your own? Adopt one of our cute critters for a week. Keep a daily journal to share with us. Sign up at Youth Desk. For kids entering Gr. 2 up.

Wed. 6/18, 9am-9pm – Registration begins for “Metamorphosis,” the Summer Reading Program for teens! For all Middle School & High School students!

Wed. 6/18, 3:30-4:30pm – Middle School Book Lovers Club – Come chat with Kat about whatever book you’re reading right now and munch on snacks.

Thu 6/19, 2-3pm – Read to Dieter, Therapy Dog – Dieter is a loveable Golden Lab who will listen to kids read. For Gr. K-5.

Thu. 6/19, 3-4pm – Training for Reading Mentors – Teens who want to pair up with Reading Buddies will meet to learn how to choose books with kids and how to encourage them to read. Reading Buddies will meet on Mondays 2-3pm starting in June 23. For students entering Gr. 9-12.

Mon. 6/23 & 6/30, 2-3pm – Reading Buddies - Kids in Gr. K-5 read to Teen Mentors. Sign up in advance.

Mon. 6/23, 7-8pm – The Ugly Bug Ball – Meet your friends at the Ugly Bug Ball! Clap, stomp, and sing along with Tom Stamp to songs you know and songs you don’t. Bee sure to come, it’s fun for everyone! For kids ages 5 and up. Register in advance.

Wed. 6/25, 2-3pm – Chess for Kids – Join the Chess Lovers from our Teen Advisory Board for an hour of play. We provide the chess sets & you provide the strategy. More sessions will follow in July. For Gr. 4-8. Sign up at Youth Desk.

Mon. 6/30, 1-2pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Strawberries – The Student Chefs from NECI prepare mouth-watering strawberry shortcakes and read some berry good books. For kids entering Gr. K & up.

Fri. May 2, 5:30-7:30pm: Reception for Mt Mansfield Union High Student Digital Photographers exhibit, “Essex Junction in April.”

Sat. May 10, 9:30-2pm: Friends of Brownell Library Late Spring Book Sale-Come stock up for summer reading on the beach, hammock or front porch. Bring a bag, save a tree. All proceeds to the Friends to support library programs.

Fri, May 16, 6:30pm: Adult Movie – “Jaws” – Considered by many to be among the greatest motion pictures ever made, “Jaws” started the summer blockbuster craze. In “Jaws” a rarity of film making is accomplished on a grand scale. The accomplishment: a movie that is widely regarded as superior to the book upon which it was based. Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider star in this movie about a rogue Great White shark terrorizing a seaside resort community. The Motion Picture Association of America rated this film PG.

Mon. May 19, 7pm: Antique & Collectible Dolls Road Show- Mary Van Buren Swasey, local doll expert, will offer an assessment of one doll (NOT Bears!) brought by patrons. She will offer an estimated date and value of each doll and will bring with her an array of doll evaluation books. The Glass case display will hold a variety of dolls from Mary’s collection. Free & Open to the Public.

Tues. May 20, 7pm: Library Trustees Meeting – Kolvoord Community Rm.

Thurs. May 22, 3:30pm: Spring Cleaning and Organizing Workshop by Gwen Farrington, a professional organizer. If the thought of tackling a winter or a lifetime’s worth of overfilled closets, garages and attics fills you with dread, Gwen will offer a wise, practical approach to clearing up the clutter. Free and Open to the Public.

Sat. May 24, 8am-12 noon: Brownell Library’s Annual Memorial Day CLEARANCE SALE under the green & white striped tent on the library lawn. What bargains you’ll find as you wait for the parade. Bring a bag save a tree. Tell your friends.

Wed. May 28, 7pm: One Woman’s Solo Motorcycle Trip to The Arctic Circle
-Deb Bishop (of Green Mountain Harley Davidson Shop) will arrive on her bike to deliver a travelogue with photos of her journey from Colorado to Alaska’s Arctic Circle. She had adventures galore. All bikers and non-bikers will enjoy her stories. Free and Open to the Public.

Tuesday Story Time for Toddlers (18-36 months): 9:10-9:30am – Picture books, songs, rhymes & puppets for toddlers with adult. (May 6)

Tuesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds: 10-10:45am – Picture books, songs, rhymes, puppets, and math activities for preschoolers. (May 6)
Wednesday Story Time for 3-5 Year Olds: 10-10:45am – Repeat of Tuesday program. (May 7)

Thurs. May 1, 3-4pm: Teen Advisory Board (TAB) – For teens, by teens. If you’re a teenager, come. Plan programs you’d like to see. Snacks! New members welcome.

– In this musical, business booms at a flower shop when an exotic potted plant called Audrey II arrives. People are rushing to see it, and then disappearing. Rated PG-13. Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB.

Thurs. May 15, 3:30-4:30pm: Middle School Book Lovers Club – Come chat with Kat about whatever book you’re reading right now and have some snacks too! For Gr. 5-8.

Tues. May 20, 3:30-4:30pm: NECI’s Tasty Reads: Spring Greens – To celebrate Spring, NECI Student Chefs will bring in a variety of lettuces, both common and exotic, and prepare a vinaigrette for yummy salads. Kids will plant seeds to take home, and hear Spring Stories. For Gr. K-5. Register.

Fri. May 23, 6:30-8:30pm: Family Movie – “Mary Poppins” – Based upon the book by P.L. Travers, this musical features Julie Andrews as Jane and Michael’s amazing new nanny in London. Rated G. Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by TAB.

Sat. May 24, 10am – Memorial Day Parade
– Watch for Brownell Library’s Float with a Giant Dragnfly, in celebration of our Summer Reading Program theme: “Catch the Reading Bug!” Marchers wanted! Teens and older kids (ages 10 & up) can carry banners, wave butterfly nets, or be bugs in the parade! Sign up at Youth Desk.
