ADULT PROGRAMS


Mon. 4/2, 7pm –Astronomical Gadgets Show & Tell Evening: Vermont Astronomical Society members will present some of their favorites, including star charts, software, observing lights and observing charts, cameras to telescope adaptors, eyepieces and web sites. Free and open to the public. Co-sponsored by Brownell Library

Wed. 4/4, 6pm – Community Supper & 7pm – ANNUAL VILLAGE MEETING at Essex Community Educational Center Auditorium. Make your voice heard and your vote count.

Wed. 4/11, 7pm – The Vermont Book of Days: The First Year w/ Michael and Missie Thurston, the father/daughter co-authors will discuss their first book as well as their forthcoming second book. Included in the program will be an overview of the Vermont Book of Days Project, including the TV program, radio show, newspaper column, website and educational materials for schools. The Thurstons will show TV episodes that pertain to the Essex Junction region, including a feature on Samuel A. Brownell, library donor. Free and open to the public. Meeks Lecture Series.

Thu. 4/12, 3-3:30pm – D.E.A.R. – Drop Everything and Read: a Celebration of the beloved author Beverly Cleary’s birthday – Everyone, staff included, is invited to put everything else aside and read for 30 minutes. Snacks provided. Internet unavailable.

April 4/15-21, National Library Week: Funding is Not Fiction. Also, as you check out your material, find out what it’s worth. Libraries save you $$.

Fri. 4/20, 6:00pm – Foreign Film Friday: Wings of Desire from Germany. An angel tires of overseeing human activity and wishes to become human when he falls in love with a mortal. PG 13

Mon. 4/23, 7pm – Vermont Poet Neil Shepard – Poetry reading from This Far From the Source, his 2006 collection, in celebration of National Poetry Month. Seven Days says, “It is refreshing to come across a poet who peers into the reflecting pool and sees the ripples rather than his own image.”

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Tues. 4/3, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Eggs Are Eggcellent! – NECI Student Chefs will prepare omelettes and read stories about eggs. Kids will dye their own hard-boiled eggs and watch Penny Pillsbury demonstrate blown eggshells. For kids in Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.

Wed. 4/4, 9-9:45am – Red Clover Picture Books for Homeschoolers – This will be the last monthly meeting to discuss this year’s Red Clover Award books. Voting takes place today! For Gr. K-3. Register at 878-6956.

Wed. 4/4, 9-9:45am – DCF Booktalks for Homeschoolers – Students vote today for their favorite book to win the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award! Voting is also available to any student in Gr. 4-8 who hasn’t voted at school. More information at the Youth Desk.

Thu. 4/5, 3-4pm – Teen Advisory Board Meeting – For teens, by teens. If you’re a teenager, please come and help us plan programs at the library that you’d like to see! Snacks! New members welcome.

Tues. 4/10, 5:30-8:30pm – Student Art Show – Students will show their families the art they created, which is on display in the library all month. Hosted by Art Teachers Jessica Andrews (Summit), Judith Tiplady (Hiawatha) and Jennifer Larkin (Fleming). Please use the Rear Entrance for this special event.

Fri. 4/13 & 4/27, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Kids of all ages will enjoy Matthew’s lighthearted songs and improvisational stories. Lots of audience participation! No registration required.

Fri. 4/13, 7-10pm – Teen Poetry Coffeehouse @ Essex Teen Center – Vermont Poet Geof Hewitt will present his talk, “Adventures in Poetry: Efficient Novels” as well as lead a poetry workshop between 7-8pm. From 8-10pm, all attending will be invited to read their own work, the work of a favorite poet, or what they’ve written that night. Sponsored by Brownell Library, Vermont Humanities Council, and Essex Teen Center.

Thu. 4/19, 3-4pm – Middle School Book Lovers Pizza Club – Come chat about whatever book you happen to be reading right now and have pizza too! This month will be for Middle Schoolers only. Call 878-6956 so we know how much pizza to order.

Sat. 4/21, 10-11am – Read to Clyde & Sara, Therapy Dogs – Clyde (Maltese) and Sara (Chocolate Lab) love to listen to kids read! Sign up now to read to Clyde or Sara for 10 minutes & listen while others read. For Gr. K-5. Call 878-6956.

Mon. 4/23, 2-2:45pm – Kasperle Puppet Theater Performs “The Princess & the Dragon” – German-style puppet show featuring a mischievous boy named Kasperle. In this story, Kasperle’s friend the Princess wears jeans and loves adventures. She helps Kasperle when a big green Dragon moves into their forest. Directed by Vicky Reithinger For ages 5-12. Tues. 4/24, 2-3pm – Yoga for Kids – Certified Yoga Teacher Jean Campbell will teach students postures and movements and breathing techniques. For ages 7-14. Mats provided. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Register in advance at 878-6956.

Wed. 4/25, 11-11:45am – Railroad Safety – Using power point and video, Perry Martel of the Vermont Rail System teaches kids how to be safe around our railroad tracks. For Gr. K-5. Register at Youth Desk.

Fri. 4/27, 6:30pm – Family Movie Night: Charlotte’s Web – E.B. White’s classic comes to life in this 2006 version, starring the voices of: Julia Roberts, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Oprah Winfrey, Kathy Bates, & Robert Redford. That’s SOME PIG! Hosted by the Teen Advisory Board.
