Wed., 5/6, 6:15 pm – Let’s Talk About It: Love and Forgiveness in the Presence of the Enemy* Discuss Bel Canto by Ann Patchett and dine over international cuisine (pot-luck). Prof. Jane Ambrose enriches our understanding of the text. Plot snapshot: A world-class lyric soprano and other distinguished guests are taken hostage; love and violence unfold. Books available.


Thu., 5/7, 5/14, 5/28, 10-11am – Seniors! Learn Very Basic Computer Skills with Americorps Volunteer Casey Clark. Learn computer lingo, use Word, search the World Wide Web, set up an e-mail account, use the mouse. Sign up required- 878-6955.


Mon., 5/11, 7pm – Genealogical researcher Cathi Wiest-Desmarais presents How to Do Civil War Veterans Research. Come with what you know about your Civil War ancestor. Cathi is bound to have some suggestions on how to proceed.


Wed., 5/13, 7pm – Justice in the Presence of the Enemy* Robert D. Rachlin, Esq., Burlington-based lawyer, reflects on representing prisoners at American Naval Base, Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and issues of national security, the limits of the law, the history of the Guantánamo detentions, and his involvement in them.


Mon., 5/18, 7pm – Coping with Unemployment, a workshop with Psychologist Carl Rabstejnek – How to deal with the physical and emotional reactions. How to appraise the situation and give permission to think for yourself and some tools to evaluate options, which might help reduce stress. Free & open to the public.


Tue., 5/19, 3-4pm – Tobacco Sheds of the Conn. River Valley author Tim Cahill speaks on these historic structures .

Wed., 5/20, 7pm – Author Ann McKinstry Micou speaks about some of the themes that recur in her three books on fiction set in Vermont. Her books will be available for purchase and autographing.

Fri., 5/1 & 5/15, 10-10:45am – Songs and Stories with Matthew – Matthew Witten performs songs about our world and tells adventurous tales. For all ages - no registration. Funded by Friends of Brownell Library.


Mon., 5/4, 3:30-4:30pm – NECI’s Tasty Reads: Cinco de Mayo – NECI Spanish Professor Mario Martinez and his student chefs present Spanish language, culture and food. Spanish and Mexican folktales, too. For Gr. K-5. Register at 878-6956.


Tues., 5/5 & 5/12, 3:30-5:30pm – Middle School Art Project – Students in Gr. 6-8 are helping us create colorful paintings to show off different parts of the Nonfiction Collection. You might paint dinosaurs, skateboarders, pets, galaxies, insects, who knows? These are the final two sessions. Led by Student Teacher Allison Cram from AD Lawton School. Register at 878-6956.


Thurs., 5/7 & 5/28, 3-4:30pm – We Have Wii! – Students can try our new Wii Game System, purchased with funds raised at last year’s Spelling Bee. Teen Advisory Board members will host each session, and play active games with students in Gr. K and up.


Fri., 5/8 & 5/22, 10-10:30am – Drop-In Story Time for Kids of All Ages – Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers are welcome to come listen to Picture Book Stories and have fun with Finger Plays and Action Rhymes. No registration required.


Fri., 5/8, 6:30-8:30pm – Teen Movie: “The Secret Life of Bees – Motherless Lily Owens lives with her abusive father on a peach farm in South Carolina in 1964. Rosaleen, Lily’s caregiver, is the victim of racial violence. The pair find refuge with three sisters who are beekeepers. Stars Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Hudson. (Rated PG-13.) Free popcorn and soda. Hosted by the Teen Advisory Board.


Mon., 5/11, 3:30-4:30pm – Teen Advisory Board (TAB) – This is the time to have your say: books, movies, programs, etc. New members always welcome! Tons of yummy snacks.

Thurs., 5/14, 3:30-4:30pm – MPH (Middle school Planners and Helpers) – Students in Gr. 6-8 come and help re-design the YA room, help out with cool projects, and talk about what’s on your minds! Snacks too!


Mon., 5/18, 3:30-4:30pm – High School Book Lust/Loathe – We’re dishing on the books we love and the books we love to hate!


Wed., 5/20, 4-5pm – Origami Airplanes – This month’s Haiku: “Gentle breeze on nose. Kites, Bernoulli, Wright Brothers. My plane flies upward.” Sun Park teaches Origami to students in Gr. 2 & up. Materials provided. Register at 878-6956.


Fri., 5/22, 6:30-8:00pm – Family Movie: “Hook – What if Peter Pan grew up? When Capt. Hook kidnaps his children, an adult Peter Pan must return to Neverland and reclaim his youthful spirit in order to challenge his old enemy. Stars Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts.
